Fate controls human and natural actions because it represents a causal chain which is itself unchangeable. The book begins when a despondent prisoner in his cell whom we take to be Boethius himself is visited by an apparition, Lady Philosophy.
But if what is in this luster is anticipated, that is the light of the jewels, not of the humans; in fact I am surprised humans eagerly admire them. From Epicurus we learn that the best things in life are free, that "when measured by the natural purpose of life, poverty is great wealth; limitless wealth, great poverty" If we attend carefully to the unjust treatment Socrates was accorded by his fellow Athenians we realize that "in the hatred unfairly directed towards an innocent philosopher we recognize an echo of the hurt we ourselves encounter at the hands of those who are either unable or unwilling to do us justice" This brief summary of de Botton's Consolations of Philosophy hardly does justice to the many delightful turns in the "plot" of the book.
By chance you do not yet understand what I mean; it is strange what I am eager to say, and so far I can hardly explain the meaning in words. So it happens that fame for however long of a time one may like, if it is thought of with unexhausted eternity, may be seen to be not small but plainly non-existent.
